A tagline or branding slogan is a short, punchy and highly memorable phrase that decribes the action or the solution of a product or service. A great tagline will generate brand confidence in the minds of the core target market so long as it fulfills the brand promise it makes. When it does, it creates a postive brand experience.
Tagline Key Elements
The perfect brand slogan is used on all marketing materials and advertising components and:
- is short, punchy and memorable
- reflects the tone and manner of the brand
- reinforces the name in an audience's memory
Taglines can have a long life like KFC's "Finger Lickin' Good" and Ram Truck's "Built Tough, Built RAM Tough." or be used simply for a specific product campaign which then dies after it ends. Apple is a big fan of this type of use and binds taglines to specifc product launches and campaigns. Consider, "Macintosh. The computer for the rest of us" (1989), "Tune Your Run" (2006 Ipod) and the most recent, "There's an App for that" for the iPhone and App Store and well on its way to becoming popular culture.
Sound Branding (Jingles)
Taglines and slogans can also be in the form of a jingle, a short musical interlude with one or more hooks. McDonald's frequents the jingle such as "You deserve a break today at McDonalds", and the now infamous Big Mac jingle; "Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a seasame seed bun, Big Mac!" Most recently, jingles have transformed into sound branding which derives the music from a jingle but is shorter and devoid of lyrics. Examples of sound branding include the NBC Chimes and the Intel Inside sonic I.D.
